Our
Story
In the summer of 2013, a group of men traveled from Birmingham to Nashville to hear Tennessee's first queer-identifying chorus, Nashville in Harmony, in concert. Inspired, they began discussing the need for a gay chorus for the Birmingham area. Very quickly, they envisioned a gay men's chorus in the tradition of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus (America's first gay-identified men's chorus) that performed highly entertaining shows designed to open hearts and minds and improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people living in the deep South. Each founder brought extensive professional expertise to the table with the intent of creating an organization with staying power.

Now in our 13th season, that founding vision has held and expanded. Steel City Men's Chorus continues to bring amazing entertainment to the region, performing in Birmingham's premier theaters and venues, all while introducing wildly diverse audiences to slices of LGBTQ+ culture in the hope that being out, visible, and vocal will help break down barriers and stereotypes regarding Alabama's queer community. Along the way, we've built a safe haven for our singers, many of whom see the chorus as a chosen second family, and provided exceptional adult education in the choral and performing arts.
