Dedicated to MISSION

Steel City Men's Chorus is laser-focused on achieving our mission. We exist to build community, educate, and give voice to LGBTQ+ issues through music and service and attempt to expand on that mission to include our audiences, as well as our singers.

We Build Community

We believe that challenging prejudice outright and also introducing people to the LGBTQ+ community in person creates a more open and stronger community for everyone. We also believe strongly in providing a safe and nurturing space where LGBTQ+ people and their allies are free to express themselves and grow. Our rehearsals always include planned breaks and meals to encourage forming friendships and bonds that can be challenging for many adults. We care for one another through all of life's challenges and create a community many consider like their family.

We Educate

Our mission to educate is two-fold: to the community we serve and to our members. We believe that cultural change comes primarily from example. But a little guidance never hurts! Our shows frequently shine a light on LGBTQ+  topics in entertaining and engaging ways that help our audiences grow and understand.

Our singers receive an exceptional adult education focusing on vocal technique, choreography, stage presence, mental acuity challenges, and team building. We teach by doing, with guided instruction, and through self-directed home study.

We Give Voice to LGBTQ+ Issues

Every Steel City Men's Chorus show is fun and entertaining by design. It can also be challenging and thought provoking, which is also by design. We seek to provide a voice to a community that historically has been marginalized, stereotyped, and silenced more often than not, setting the record straight (so to speak). Sometimes our topics are ripped from the headlines, addressing subjects like trans rights, marriage equality, and the criminalization of drag performances. Other times, we've taken on more universal topics like love, fear, loneliness, and suicide. But usually, we just put ourselves out there, making our community visible in all our quirky truths. Because the more we're known for who we really are, the harder it is to perpetuate narratives that harm.

Music and Service Are Our Love Language

We love to sing and produce shows, but we're also committed to providing service to the greater Birmingham area. In the past, we've partnered with Community Kitchens to cook and serve meals to the homeless, performed for the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center's L' Chaim celebration, participated in neighborhood clean up projects, performed at the observance and walk for victims of the Pulse Nightclub massacre, added our voices to the March for Our Lives, cooked gumbo for Episcopal Place's Gumbo Gala and caroled for their residents, palletized medical surplus equipment for shipment with H.U.B., hosted stops for Birmingham AIDS Outreach's Poker Run and Crestwood Crawl, and so much more. Giving back and sharing our talents is not just a mission statement; it's in our DNA.
