"Local gay men’s chorus hits a high note with new artistic director."
BIRMINGHAM, AL – Michael Weinberg has joined Birmingham-based Steel City Men’s Chorus, Alabama’s largest gay men’s chorus, as its new artistic director, according to chorus board chair, Clifford Beach. As artistic director, Weinberg will conduct the chorus and be responsible for producing their unique shows, which include everything from classical, traditional, and Broadway to contemporary and popular styles of music.
Originally from Virginia, Weinberg currently lives in Huntsville, AL, where he is the Director of Choirs at the Randolph School, a private college preparatory K-12 school. A conductor, singer, and teacher, Weinberg has appeared with numerous professional organizations, including the Oregon Bach Festival and Washington National Opera, and has performed across the United States and Europe. He is completing the professional work requirement for his doctorate in choral conducting from Yale University, and has previously conducted numerous collegiate and high school ensembles in the DC area, Philadelphia, New Haven, and Boston.
“We are thrilled to have Michael on board as our new artistic director,” said Beach. “We have four successful seasons under our belts. And now, with Michael’s experience, expertise and enthusiasm in both music and advocacy, we can only go higher.”
Weinberg, who previously sang and worked with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC, which recently performed in Birmingham alongside SCMC says, “I am excited to begin working with this terrific ensemble not only to make wonderful music, but also to be a voice and advocate for the LGBTQ community in Alabama and beyond.”
